It isn’t known whether the Romans used the toilet seat as a barrier against the sewage flowing below, or as a way of making the experience of going to the toilet more comfortable. An alternative view is that the wood had a nicer feel than the rough brickwork the toilets were made of. Another juncture is that the wood was warmer to rest on than the brickwork so provided more comfort in cooler climates. We may just never know the motivation before this invention.

It was the wealthier members of society who could afford the luxury of a seat, whilst the general public shared communal seat-less toilets. By the 1970′s the toilet had made it into the majority of homes in the UK and toilet seats became common place.

Recently our toilet seat which is supposed to be white started turning blue. I’m not sure why. I have tried everything to clean it, bleach wipes, vinegar and water, scrubbing bubbles. Nothing is working. Any ideas on why it’s turning colors and how to fix it?
